Description

On June 8, 1973, four men were let into a rented mansion in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. By dawn, Major Coxson, a friend of Muhammad Ali, was dead. Six months later, the FBI put two Philadelphia men on its Ten Most Wanted list on the same day. The Philadelphia Inquirer called both men suspects in the Coxson killing. One of them, Ronald Harvey, was convicted of it in 1977. The other, Samuel Christian, was never convicted of that killing or of a 1972 nightclub killing in Atlantic City. This is the documented story of how the FBI closed in on Philadelphia's Black Mafia, and of the man who was hunted and never convicted of murder. Where a claim rests on one account, we say so. 0:00 Cherry Hill, June 8, 1973 1:14 The Black Mafia 3:17 The man at the center 4:42 Club Harlem 6:32 The Major 9:45 Cherry Hill 10:57 Two names, one day 12:19 The crackdown 16:14 The other name 17:57 The verdicts 18:22 The end SOURCES: FBI, Ten Most Wanted Fugitives (301 to 400) and program history; FBI Vault, Black Mafia file (1974 clippings from the Philadelphia Inquirer, Evening Bulletin and Daily News); Associated Press, June 9, 1973; Time, May 29, 1972; The New York Times (Oct. 25, 1971; Apr. 4, 1972; June 9, 1977); Philadelphia Daily News (1974, 2002, 2012); Philadelphia Inquirer (1974, 1977, 2010, 2013); Philadelphia Magazine (Sean Patrick Griffin, Mar. 13, 2016; Maury Levy); Sean Patrick Griffin, Black Brothers, Inc.
