Description
In July 1968, Bumpy Johnson, Harlem's most famous gangster, collapsed at Wells Restaurant while out on bail and under federal indictment. Thirty-nine years later, American Gangster showed his death in a discount electronics store, with Frank Lucas beside him. Lucas said he was there. Bumpy's widow, Mayme Johnson, said Lucas was nowhere around. This is the real, documented story of three accounts of Bumpy Johnson's last night, and what each one actually rests on.
Sources: Mark Jacobson, "The Return of Superfly," New York magazine (Aug. 14, 2000); Jenice M. Armstrong, "The real rap on 'Bumpy,'" Philadelphia Inquirer (Nov. 5, 2007); Mayme Johnson interview, Planet Ill; Mayme Hatcher Johnson and Karen E. Quinones Miller, Harlem Godfather (2008).
