Description

Africa’s journey from colonial rule to independent nations was not achieved in a single day. It was shaped by decades of political organizing, labor movements, student activism, newspapers, intellectual movements, diplomacy, negotiations, and, in some regions, armed liberation struggles. In this documentary, we explore how Africans challenged colonial systems and demanded the right to determine their own political future. From Ghana’s independence in 1957 and Kwame Nkrumah’s Pan-African vision, to the wave of independence across Africa in 1960, the struggles in Algeria, Kenya, Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau, and the creation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, we trace the major turning points that transformed the continent. We also examine the later struggles that continued after many countries gained independence—including the liberation of Zimbabwe in 1980, Namibia in 1990, and South Africa’s 1994 democratic election. But independence did not erase every challenge. Newly independent countries inherited colonial borders, economic structures, political institutions, and the pressures of the Cold War. Independence was therefore not simply an ending—it marked the beginning of a new chapter. From colonial subjects to independent nations, Africa’s political map was transformed forever.
