Description

In 1902, a government clerk opened a leather ledger and made a decision that would echo for six generations. He looked at a Creek family — mother, father, children — all of whom had lived as Creek, spoken Mvskoke, danced at the Green Corn Ceremony. But the father had dark skin. So the clerk did not write "Creek." He wrote "Freedman." That word did not mean free. It meant erased. This is the story of how the United States — and later, the tribes themselves — systematically wrote Black Indians out of the historical record. From the Spanish expeditions of the 1500s, to the Trail of Tears, to the Dawes Rolls, to the 2025 Muscogee Nation Supreme Court decision, we trace a 500-year story of broken treaties, weaponized paperwork, and a fight for recognition that continues today. Learn why the 1866 treaties promised citizenship but the one-drop rule stole it. Why the Cherokee Nation expelled 2,800 Freedmen descendants in 2007. And why, after 120 years, the work of writing Black Indians back into history is finally beginning. ⚖️ DISCLAIMER: This documentary examines historical records, legal cases, and constitutional amendments. It is intended for educational purposes. We honor the sovereignty of all Native nations while documenting the complex history of racial classification imposed by the U.S. government and its lasting effects. 👍 LIKE this video if you learned something new. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE and turn on notifications for more untold stories of history. 💬 COMMENT below: Were you taught about Black Indians and Freedmen in school? #BlackIndians #Freedmen #NativeAmericanHistory #TrailOfTears #DawesRolls #CherokeeNation #MuscogeeCreek #BlackHistory #UntoldHistory #Documentary #IndigenousHistory #HistoryTheyDontTeach
