Description

Before Ethiopia: Aksum and the Ancient States of the Horn of Africa Long before the modern nation of Ethiopia, the Horn of Africa was home to one of the ancient world's most powerful states — the Kingdom of Aksum. Described by UNESCO as a major power between the Eastern Roman Empire and Persia, Aksum minted its own gold, built monoliths over 100 feet tall, and dominated the trade routes connecting Rome to India. The 3rd-century Persian prophet Mani ranked Aksum alongside Rome, Persia, and China as one of the four greatest powers on Earth. But Aksum did not appear out of nowhere. In this video, we trace the full political history of the Horn — from the pre-Aksumite state of Dʿmt to the rise of the Aksumite Empire, its adoption of Christianity under King Ezana, its military intervention in Yemen under King Kaleb, and the complex factors behind its decline. We also correct common errors found in popular histories — including the myth that the Persian conquest of Egypt caused Aksum's fall, and the oversimplified claim that the Zagwe Dynasty directly succeeded Aksum. This is the story of an African civilization that connected three continents — carved in stone, written in Ge'ez, and waiting in the Ethiopian highlands. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 0:00 — The Four Great Powers 0:50 — Chapter 1: The Pre-Aksumite World & Dʿmt 1:55 — Chapter 2: The Rise of Aksum & the Port of Adulis 3:05 — Chapter 3: One of the Four Great Powers 4:10 — Chapter 4: Christianity and the Court of Ezana 5:10 — Chapter 5: Kaleb, Yemen, and the Persian Wars 6:55 — Chapter 6: Decline — What Actually Happened 8:30 — Chapter 7: Monumental Aksum 9:20 — Outro: The Enduring Legacy 🔍 SOURCES & RESEARCH: This video was fact-checked against UNESCO World Heritage records, the Kephalaia of Mani, archaeological reports from the Aksum archaeological site, and peer-reviewed scholarship on Aksumite-Persian relations and the pre-Aksumite state of Dʿmt. 👍 If you learned something new, please like and subscribe for more deep
