Description
September 1967. Two armies stood barely twenty metres apart on a Himalayan ridge. Within days, the Nathu La battlefield would become one of the most significant India-China clashes after the 1962 war.
This is the story of the Battle of Nathu La 1967 — the largely forgotten border conflict between India and China that took place just five years after India's defeat in the 1962 Sino-Indian War.
This documentary traces how tensions along the Sikkim-Tibet border escalated from diplomatic confrontation to a deadly clash at Nathu La. When Chinese troops opened fire on Indian positions, Major General Sagat Singh made a critical battlefield decision that changed the course of the fighting — ordering Indian artillery to respond.
But the story began much earlier.
From the 1967 Beijing airport incident involving Indian diplomats, to the growing tension after the 1965 India-China confrontation, the dispute over barbed-wire fencing at Nathu La, and finally the intense artillery battle that lasted for three days — this documentary explores how India refused to back down.
Key moments covered in this video:
• The 1967 Beijing airport incident involving Indian diplomats
• Rising India-China tensions after the 1965 ultimatum
• Major General Sagat Singh's refusal to vacate Nathu La
• The disputed boundary and barbed-wire confrontation
• The September 1967 Battle of Nathu La
• Major General Sagat Singh's controversial artillery decision
• Three days of intense fighting on the Himalayan frontier
• The follow-up Cho La clash in October 1967
• Indian and Chinese casualty claims
• What happened to the officers involved after the battle
• How Nathu La influenced the confidence of the Indian Army before 1971
Most Indians know about the 1962 India-China War, but far fewer know what happened just five years later at Nathu La.
The Battle of Nathu La became a defining moment for an Indian Army that was rebuilding itself after the humiliation of 1962. It was a battle of difficult decisions, extreme terrain, artillery fire, military leadership and determination.
At the centre of the story was Major General Sagat Singh — an officer whose battlefield decision became one of the most controversial and consequential moments of the conflict.
The story of Nathu La is not just about a border clash. It is about how an army regained confidence, how commanders made decisions under extreme pressure, and how the events of 1967 shaped the strategic story that would unfold in the years leading up to the 1971 India-Pakistan War.
