Description

Does the Quran's account of Moses match the Torah? In this reaction video we break down a street conversation between Belle, a Catholic Christian, and two Muslims, Leila and a Muslim brother, that starts with a question about the hijab and quickly turns into a debate about scripture, manuscripts and religious authority. It is a short but revealing Christian vs Muslim discussion about how the Quran relates to the Torah and the Bible, and what happens when a specific claim is tested against the historical evidence. Despite the rain, a phone with no data and two people pushing back at once, Belle stays calm, friendly and focused on one clear question from start to finish. The conversation opens with Belle being asked why she does not wear a hijab. Instead of debating head coverings, she redirects the discussion to the foundation of religious authority. For Muslims, that authority is the Quran. For Christians, it is the Bible. Belle then points to Surah 17, verse 101, where the Quran says God gave Moses nine clear signs and tells the reader to ask the Jewish people of that time about it. After the verse is looked up on a borrowed phone, Belle asks a simple question: if the Quran says nine signs, how many are in the Torah? The Torah, in the book of Exodus, describes ten plagues on Egypt, ending with the death of the firstborn, the event remembered every year at Passover. Leila argues that the Quran's nine is correct and the Torah's ten is not. Belle responds that the verse itself sends readers to the Jewish community of Medina, home to the Jewish tribes of Banu Qaynuqa, Banu Nadir and Banu Qurayza in the seventh century. If their Torah had only nine signs, it would have had no tenth plague and no Passover, something no Jewish community has ever been known to have. Belle then asks for just one manuscript or one copy of the Torah that contains nine signs instead of ten, arguing that every manuscript ever found includes the death of the firstborn.
