Description
📖 Forty years of dressing women over 60, the whole method, set down in one book
https://viviansinclairstyle.com/
The first genuinely cold morning of the year. You take the coat down, you do it up, you catch yourself in the glass by the front door, and for a moment you do not recognise the woman looking back at you. She looks wider. Shorter. Heavier than she was on Sunday.
And you have not changed at all in a week. Not by an ounce. The coat has told a story about your body, out loud, to everybody who sees you today, and the story is not true.
WHY YOUR COAT MATTERS MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE IN YOUR HALL: from the middle of October until the end of March, your coat is not part of your outfit. It IS your outfit. It is your whole outline, the thing people see across a car park, and the only thing anybody at the school play could describe afterwards. You can have the loveliest blouse in the world underneath it and nobody will ever know.
THE RULE UNDERNEATH ALL OF IT: your eye does not measure people, it guesses at them from the outline. In summer the cloth follows you and the guess is accurate. In winter THE COAT BECOMES THE OUTLINE, and the eye does something very simple and completely unfair. It takes the edge of the coat to be the edge of you. A good coat lets the eye find your shoulder line, your waist or your leg line. A bad coat hides all three at once, and when the eye cannot find your shape, it fills the gap with the biggest shape available.
THE FIVE:
• THE COCOON. Dropped shoulder, body curving out, hem curving back in, rather like an egg with a collar on. It hides all three anchors at once and leaves the widest point of the whole garment sitting at your middle.
• THE FULL LENGTH PLUSH. The teddy, the deep shearling, the thick suede. Two things happen at once: the pile adds real inches before your body has even started, AND it is matte, so it drinks the light and gives the eye no contrast anywhere. It reads as one solid block, and a solid block always reads as heavy.
• THE WIDE HORIZONTAL PUFFER. And no, this is not the old "horizontal stripes make you look wider" line, because a narrow stripe can genuinely lengthen you. A puffer channel is not a flat stripe. It is stuffed, it stands out from you, and it is very wide, so the eye gets pulled round you band by band through the widest part.
• THE HEM THAT LANDS AT YOUR WIDEST POINT. The sneaky one, because it looks so sensible on the hanger. A heavy coat hem is a thick horizontal line, and wherever you put it you are shining a light on that exact spot. THE TEST: stand at a mirror, hands flat on the sides of your hips, slide down until you feel the widest part. That is the line to clear.
• THE TRENCH OR CAPE WORN LOOSE. And I love a trench. The trouble is almost never the coat, it is what we do with the belt.
THE FOUR-SECOND FIX FOR THE TRENCH: do not tie the belt at the front. Take both ends round behind you, tie a loose knot at the back of your waist, and leave the front hanging open. It pulls in the spare cloth at the sides so the coat curves in at your waist, while the front falls in two long clean vertical lines. You get your waist and your long line at the same moment. It is the thing you have been admiring on elegant women for years without being able to work out what they were doing.
THE TWO THINGS THAT IMPROVE ALMOST ANY COAT YOU ALREADY OWN: wear it open, which turns a block into a column. And put ONE COLOUR underneath it, cream with cream, navy with navy, so the eye runs from your chin to your shoes without a single horizontal interruption. It costs nothing. You already own both pieces.
AND ONE ABOUT YOUR FACE: a hard flat black right under your chin absorbs light and throws shadow up under your jaw in the one season you are least likely to have any colour of your own. Camel, cream, oatmeal, stone does the opposite and bounces light back up at you. If your coat is dark and you love it, a pale scarf between it and your face does the same job.
CHOOSING ONE, since it is the season: think about the life you actually lead rather than the life in the photograph. Try it on OVER A JUMPER, not over a thin blouse, then reach forward as though for a steering wheel. Feel the sleeve lining, because a sleeve that drags is a coat you will leave hanging up. And a very good old coat beats a poor new one every time. Mine is 22 years old and on its second lining.

Tell me in the comments which one is hanging by your front door, and whether you are going to try the belt behind your back. I read every single one.
