Description

In a House hearing, Rep. Tim Kennedy confronts Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin over the death of a blind, disabled refugee released from DHS custody. The refugee, Nurul Amin Shah Alam, had fled genocide in Burma and was living in the United States lawfully with his family. After DHS confirmed his legal status and released him, he was left alone in a closed coffee shop parking lot in Buffalo, New York, in freezing winter temperatures, with no coat and no way to contact anyone. Five days later, he was found dead of hypothermia, dehydration, and a stress ulcer. Kennedy presents a timeline: the release, DHS's public statement claiming no signs of disability were observed, and two months of silence following his formal letter demanding an investigation.
