23 Years of Lies: The Life of the Ultimate Impostor | True Story

A surgeon who never studied medicine. A professor who never earned a degree. A monk, a prison official, a college founder — all played by one high school dropout, for twenty-three years. This is a true story, and it is stranger than fiction. In 1951, aboard a Canadian warship during the Korean War, this man was handed a scalpel and a deck of wounded soldiers. He had never set foot in medical school. What happened in that operating room is one of the most astonishing true stories in modern history — and it is only the beginning of who Ferdinand Waldo Demara really was. This history documentary traces twenty-three years of borrowed identities — through monasteries, universities, a hospital operating room and a Texas prison — and asks what he was really running from, and what he finally found at the very end of his life.
