Description

Social Security's 2027 raise is 3.6%, about $75 a month on the average retirement check ($2,095 → $2,170). But prices for the households the COLA tracks rose 3.9% in the year to September, faster than the raise. By then the average check had already lost about $84 a month of buying power. Watch retirees do the math on propane, groceries, rent, Medicare and taxes on benefits, and hear from the ones who found ways to keep more of their check. This channel covers what's really happening to working Americans' money. In this video: - How the 3.6% COLA is calculated, and why it measures prices that already happened - The 2026 raise was used up by April (TNO calculation, BLS CPI-W) - Since 2020: electricity +46%, home natural gas +52%, car insurance +48%, beef +63%, against +31% from every COLA - Medicare Part B: +$17.90 took about a third of last year's raise. The 2027 projection is +$6.60, and CMS sets the real number in November - The Part D cap rises to $2,400, and there are no $0-premium standalone drug plans in 2027 (KFF) - Taxes on benefits: the $25,000 line from 1984 was never indexed - SSI ($1,029 max), widows, and the 1.4 million older Americans on both Social Security and SSI - The trust fund: 2032 and 78% payable - Medicare Savings Programs, Extra Help, SNAP and open enrollment (Oct 15 – Dec 7) Help mentioned: Medicare.gov plan finder · free counseling at shiphelp.org · benefitscheckup.org (NCOA) · Medicare Savings Programs through your state Medicaid office · Extra Help through ssa.gov Sources: Social Security Administration 2027 COLA release and fact sheet (Oct 14, 2026) · BLS CPI, September 2026 (Oct 14, 2026) · BLS R-CPI-E · CMS 2026 Part B fact sheet · 2026 Medicare and Social Security Trustees Reports · KFF (Part D and Medicare Advantage 2027) · Census Bureau P60-290 (SPM) · Congressional Research Service IF11397 · IRS senior deduction page · Harvard JCHS · USDA.
