MEGALODON UPDATE: Scientists Found the Fossil That Changes Everything

Scientists have revealed a massive new Megalodon discovery, and it could change how we understand the largest shark to ever live. A set of gigantic Megalodon vertebrae discovered in Denmark had been considered lost for decades. Scientists were left relying heavily on old photographs and measurements of the fossil, including one enormous vertebra reported to measure around 23 centimeters, or roughly 9 inches, across. Now, surviving pieces of the lost Megalodon fossil have been rediscovered and studied again. And the original measurement was REAL. The fossils belong to Otodus megalodon, the enormous prehistoric shark that dominated ancient oceans millions of years ago. These vertebrae are the largest known Megalodon vertebral remains ever documented and have become an important piece of evidence in the debate over just how enormous Megalodon could actually grow. Some modern Megalodon size estimates suggest the biggest individuals may have approached roughly 24.3 meters, or almost 80 feet long. Researchers were even able to study growth bands preserved inside the fossil, giving scientists new clues about Megalodon growth, age, body size, and biology. But the story gets even crazier. Fossil remains from a basking shark were also discovered alongside the Megalodon vertebrae, raising the possibility that scientists may be looking at traces of what this individual Megalodon once ate. So what does this new Megalodon discovery actually prove? Was Megalodon really almost 80 feet long? Could it have grown even larger? And how did one of the most important Megalodon fossils disappear inside a museum collection for decades? In this video, we're breaking down the newest Megalodon research, the rediscovered lost fossil, the giant shark vertebrae, Megalodon's true maximum size, the mysterious basking shark remains, and what scientists now know about one of the most terrifying prehistoric predators ever to live.
