Scientists Brought Back Dire Wolves... But Something Went Wrong

Scientists brought back animals resembling the extinct dire wolf, and now the three dire wolves are growing up FAST. After the original announcement went viral, the wolves continued getting bigger, forming a pack, chasing prey, and giving researchers an entirely new problem to solve. In this video, we’re looking at what happened to the dire wolves after they were brought back, how large they’ve become, how the three wolves behave together, and whether they could ever survive like the prehistoric dire wolves that disappeared more than 10,000 years ago. Colossal Biosciences used ancient dire wolf DNA, gene editing, gray wolf cells, cloning techniques, and surrogate animals to create three genetically engineered wolves carrying traits selected from the extinct dire wolf. The project became one of the biggest de-extinction stories ever, alongside attempts to bring back animals like the woolly mammoth, dodo, thylacine, and other extinct species. But creating the animal was only the beginning. The three dire wolves now have to develop behaviors that their extinct ancestors once learned naturally from other wolves. That includes pack behavior, hunting, prey response, social learning, and eventually the possibility of future generations living with less human help. We’ll also break down one of the biggest controversies surrounding the project: are these actually resurrected dire wolves, or genetically modified gray wolves with dire wolf traits? Scientists still disagree over exactly how animals created through functional de-extinction should be classified. Either way, these three wolves are giving researchers a completely new look at what happens when scientists try to recreate an animal that vanished thousands of years ago. How big will the dire wolves eventually get? Can they learn how to hunt? Could future dire wolves ever survive in the wild? And what happens when scientists can recreate an extinct animal’s body... but not everything that animal once learned? This is the story of what happened after scientists brought back the dire wolf.
