Description

The Dodo could be coming back to life much sooner than most people realize. Scientists are currently working on one of the craziest de-extinction projects ever attempted: bringing back the extinct Dodo bird hundreds of years after it disappeared from Mauritius. Using ancient Dodo DNA, living pigeon relatives, gene editing, reproductive cells, surrogate birds, and new de-extinction technology, researchers are attempting to create a modern animal that recreates many of the traits of the original Dodo. And there is now a rough timeline for when we could potentially see the first one. In this video, we break down how scientists are bringing the Dodo back to life, when a recreated Dodo could potentially hatch, how Dodo de-extinction actually works, why scientists are using pigeons and chickens, what the first recreated Dodo might look like, and what could happen if Dodos eventually return to Mauritius. We also answer some of the biggest questions surrounding Dodo resurrection. Would a recreated Dodo actually count as a real Dodo? Could scientists create an entire breeding population? Where would the new Dodos live? Would they survive in the modern world? Could they ever be released back into the wild? And should scientists even bring extinct animals back in the first place? The Dodo became one of the most famous symbols of extinction after disappearing in the 1600s. Now, advances in genetic engineering, ancient DNA, primordial germ cells, genome editing, conservation biology, artificial incubation, and de-extinction science are making ideas that once sounded like science fiction feel increasingly possible. Companies such as Colossal Biosciences are working on several extinct animal projects, including the Dodo, woolly mammoth, thylacine, and other species scientists hope new technology could someday help recreate. If current research continues progressing, a recreated Dodo could potentially appear sometime in the early 2030s. That means our generation could actually live in a world where an animal extinct for more than 300 years is alive again. This is the story of the Dodo de-extinction project, how scientists hope to resurrect the Dodo, when the Dodo could return, and what bringing extinct species back could mean for the future of wildlife.
