Description
Some extinct animals disappeared millions of years before humans ever existed. But others survived long enough for something unbelievable to happen — we actually captured them on video before they vanished.
In this video, we’re looking at some of the rarest footage of extinct animals ever recorded, including incredibly rare archival videos, recordings of final known individuals, lost species caught on film, and animals that may have disappeared shortly after cameras captured them alive.
These aren't recreations or dinosaur animations. These are real recordings of animals that once walked, climbed, hopped, flew, and called while humans were standing there with cameras.
We’ll see incredibly rare footage of the Tasmanian tiger, also known as the thylacine, including historic films showing living thylacines before the last confirmed captive animal died. We’ll also look at footage of the Imperial woodpecker, one of the largest and rarest woodpeckers ever known, filmed alive in Mexico before confirmed sightings disappeared.
There’s also surviving footage of the Toolache wallaby, the Heath hen and Booming Ben, the mysterious kouprey, the ivory-billed woodpecker, the golden toad, the Pyrenean ibex, and the incredibly sad story of the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō, whose final known recordings preserved a mating call that would eventually receive no answer.
Some of these extinct animals were filmed in black and white. Others were somehow captured in color. Some recordings show populations that were already collapsing, while others may show some of the final individuals of their species ever seen alive.
And that creates one of the strangest things about modern extinction.
Usually when we think about extinct animals, we imagine fossils, skeletons, museum displays, dinosaurs, mammoths, and creatures from prehistoric Earth. But these animals survived recently enough that you can literally press play and watch an extinct species move again.
From the Tasmanian tiger and extinct wallabies to vanished birds and lost amphibians, these are some of the rarest pieces of wildlife footage ever preserved.
Which extinct animal would you bring back if you could choose only one?
