Description
What causes El Niño and how does it affect weather around the world? 🌊 The 2026 super El Niño could become one of the strongest on record, bringing warmer winters to Canada, heavier rain to the southern United States and flooding to parts of South America, while Australia and Indonesia face drought 🌎 It starts in the Pacific Ocean, where trade winds normally push warm surface water toward Indonesia and northern Australia. Cold water off Peru and southern Ecuador helps keep the coast dry. Every two to seven years, these winds weaken and warm water spreads east. Sea surface temperatures just 1–2°C above normal can shift global weather patterns. In the 1870s, a powerful El Niño contributed to a famine that took millions of lives 🌡️ Forecasts suggest this super El Niño could push temperatures in parts of the eastern Pacific more than 3°C above normal. As the ocean releases heat into the atmosphere, global temperatures rise and 2027 could become the hottest year ever recorded.
