Description
Why is the Caspian Sea actually a lake and not a sea? 🌊 The Caspian Sea is the largest lake in the world by surface area, stretching about 750 miles across five countries. It has massive waves, salty water and depths exceeding 3,000 feet 🤯 But despite its name, the Caspian Sea is geographically classified as a lake because it has no natural connection to the ocean. Unlike the Black Sea, which connects to the Atlantic Ocean through the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar, the Caspian Sea is completely landlocked. 🌍 But why is its water salty? Millions of years ago, the Caspian was part of a much larger body of water called the Paratethys. As land rose and water levels changed, this ancient sea split into separate basins, leaving salt behind. Rivers continue to bring more salt into the lake 🧂 To ancient people, this enormous body of salty water looked like a sea, which is why we still call it the Caspian Sea today.
