Description
Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest in the world 🇧🇷 But its modern borders started with a straight line across the Atlantic Ocean! In the late 15th century, Spain and Portugal searched for a sea route to Asia ⛵ Portugal looked for a way around Africa while Spain sent Christopher Columbus west toward Japan and China. He found land, but it wasn’t Asia. Both countries claimed the new lands, so in 1493, the pope drew a line across the Atlantic: west for Spain and east for Portugal 📜 Portugal wanted more room in the Atlantic, so the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas moved the line farther west. When the Portuguese reached Brazil in 1500, eastern South America was on their side. They began colonizing the land and gradually expanded far beyond the line 🗺️ Centuries later, independence and border agreements helped shape modern Brazil. That’s why Brazil speaks Portuguese today while most of the rest of South America speaks Spanish 🇪🇸
