Description

Singaporeans hold less spare cash than they should, and the size of a CPF statement is the reason. It looks like a safety net from a distance. The week you need one, it is not. This video replaces the question "how much do I have" with the only one that matters in a bad month: how much could I have in my hand by Friday, without wrecking anything. It walks all four pots and what each can actually do. CPF, which for most purposes before 55 answers nothing, with MediSave the one exception that pays the hospital rather than paying you. CPF investments, where selling sends the proceeds back to your Ordinary Account at the end of the second month, with interest lost and nothing spendable produced. SRS, which has a door that costs full taxation plus a 5% penalty before your retirement age. And cash and shares, the only pot you can reach quickly, which is exactly why the shares get sold at the worst possible moment. The buffer is not there to earn anything. It is there to let everything else be left alone. GET THE FULL PLAN The Singapore Retirement Blueprint. Workbook plus the Drawdown Planner spreadsheet. https://moneywithwei.com MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO CPF Investment Scheme, sale proceeds and CPF account uses: cpf.gov.sg SRS withdrawals, the 5% penalty and the medical exceptions: iras.gov.sg Deposit Insurance Scheme coverage: sdic.org.sg Figures reference CPF, IRAS and SDIC rules as published for 2026. CPF Investment Scheme sale proceeds are credited to the CPF Investment Account and returned to the Ordinary Account at the end of the second month if not reinvested, and CPF warns up to two months of CPF interest can be lost. SRS withdrawals before the statutory retirement age that applied at your first contribution are fully taxable and carry a 5% penalty, with narrow exceptions for incapacity and terminal illness which are treated like a retirement-age withdrawal. Singapore dollar deposits are insured up to $100,000 per depositor per bank. The three to six months of expenses figure is a widely used rule of thumb and is not a CPF, MAS or IRAS figure; the right amount differs by household.
