Description

You can top up CPF, have the transfer accepted, and still get zero tax relief. There are four ways that happens, and nothing in the process warns you before you press send. Tax relief is not a rebate. It comes off the income you are taxed on, not off your tax bill, so the same $8,000 top-up is worth $560 to one person, $160 to another and nothing at all to a third. This video works out what it is actually worth at your income, then walks through the four ways it lands at zero: you were not paying tax to begin with, the person you topped up is already at the Full Retirement Sum, you took the matching grant instead, or you had already hit the $80,000 ceiling on all reliefs. Plus the two checks to run before you transfer, and the date it all has to happen by. CPF accepts top-ups far beyond the point where the tax relief stops, and the money is never refundable. GET THE FULL PLAN The Singapore Retirement Blueprint. Workbook plus the Drawdown Planner spreadsheet. https://moneywithwei.com Figures reference CPF and IRAS rules as published for 2026. The Full Retirement Sum of $220,400 and the Enhanced Retirement Sum of $440,800 are the published 2026 sums. The person with a chargeable income of $28,000, and the $560 and $160 savings figures, are worked examples calculated from the published resident tax bands, not published data, and your own figure will differ. Relief limits depend on the recipient's Special Account or Retirement Account balance, so check yours before relying on any example here.
