Description
Dividends are tax-free in Singapore. That is true, and there is a sentence missing from the end of it.
If the company is American, close to a third is taken before the money ever reaches your account.
The United States withholds 30% on dividends paid to a Singapore resident, because Singapore has no comprehensive income tax treaty with the US. Countries that do have one typically get around 15%. And here the amount taken is permanently lost rather than credited, because Singapore does not tax that income in the first place, so there is nothing to offset it against. This video covers why it happens, what it costs on a real dividend, why a W-8BEN does not change it, the structural fix that roughly halves it by holding the same American companies through a fund domiciled in a treaty country, and the three things that fix does not solve, including US estate tax on US-situs assets above USD 60,000.
Tax-free in Singapore is true and incomplete.

The 30% figure is the US statutory withholding rate that applies absent a treaty exemption, per IRS Publication 515, and Singapore does not appear among the US income tax treaty partners. The roughly 15% applying to an Irish-domiciled fund is a fund-level rate under the US-Ireland treaty and is a cost inside the fund rather than a payment or refund to the investor; confirm the current rate and any fund's own treatment in its documents. The $1,000 dividend becoming $700, and $850 through an Irish-domiciled fund, are worked examples calculated from those rates, not published data. US estate tax exposure on US-situs assets above USD 60,000 is raised as a flag only and is a question for a qualified cross-border adviser.
