Hafgúfa (The Sea Monster) - Old Norse Viking Music

Runes of the North brings the medieval sea legend to life in “Hafgúfa (The Sea Monster)”, a dark Old Norse song about a creature so immense that sailors could mistake its back for an island. 🌊🐋 The Hafgúfa appears in medieval Scandinavian tradition, including Konungs skuggsjá, where it is described as one of the greatest creatures of the sea. It waits beneath the surface, opens its enormous jaws like a passage through the ocean, draws fish and unsuspecting ships toward it, then closes its mouth and disappears again into the depths. This song turns that old account into a seafaring tale of black water, rising waves, frightened sailors and a living island waiting beneath the sea.
