The Royal Mansion Prince Andrew Lost—and the £5 Million Repair Bill He Left Behind
Subscribe to the channel: @LostGrandeurUK
For 50 years, Royal Lodge was the beloved Windsor home of the Queen Mother, who died there in 2002 at the age of 101. In 2003, Prince Andrew took the 30-room mansion on a 75-year lease for a single payment of £1 million and a rent of one peppercorn a year, then spent more than £7.5 million restoring it. He was almost impossible to remove. Yet by the winter of 2025 he had been stripped of his royal titles, forced to surrender the house, and told the £488,342.21 he was owed for leaving would be wiped out entirely, because the Crown Estate had found the mansion "dilapidated." After more than 20 years and over £8 million of his own money, he walked away with nothing.

In this video, we talk about how Prince Andrew lost Royal Lodge, including the extraordinary peppercorn lease of 2003, the £1 million premium and £7.5 million renovation, the Queen Mother's fifty years in the house, the Epstein scandal and the 2019 interview that ended his public life, the 2025 removal of his titles and the name Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the surrender of the lease and the move to Sandringham, the £488,342.21 compensation cancelled by dilapidations, the daughters left with nothing to inherit, and the parliamentary questions over how the lease was ever agreed.
