Description
Rhonda Juul's murder conviction in the Florida hot car death of 10-month-old Aria Paige has been overturned by an appeals court. Why did judges say the verdict can't stand?
A jury convicted the babysitter of third-degree felony murder in about an hour. She was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Then Florida's First District Court of Appeal stepped in. Two of three judges ruled that the jury was never told the one thing that may have mattered most: whether Juul knowingly left the child in the car.
In this breakdown, we walk through the case from the start. You'll see body camera footage from the scene, the temperature readings taken inside the SUV, and the investigator's testimony. You'll also hear Juul's own account on the stand and the jury instructions at the center of the appeal. We explain what felony murder means, why the court rejected the state's reading of Florida's unattended-child statute, and what happens next, including a possible retrial and a civil lawsuit filed by the Paige family in Baker County.
This video belongs to the true crime and court case analysis genre, covering criminal appeals and legal explainers.
