Description
You sometimes hear people claim that Lies of P “fixes” FromSoftware’s Soulsborne formula and, while I don’t fully agree, I see their point. In this Soulslike, Neowiz manages to get rid of a lot of the “systemic friction” while keeping all the “mechanical friction” we know and love.
Lies of P’s gameplay is one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I have ever had. I have had very few gaming moments feel as good as taking down Laxasia, for example. Part of the reason for that is the game’s complete removal of systemic friction. You know the type — cluttered, confusing menus, annoyingly long runbacks, et cetera. We all love FromSoft, but their games are full of these sorts of things, and Lies of P completely cuts down on them. This allows them to go all-in on making the level design and combat as difficult as possible with incredibly demanding parry mechanics. This game design analysis will explore how Neowiz and Round8 Studios were able to cut out the fat and streamline your suffering.
