Description

When Marine One lifts off the White House lawn, it never flies alone. Up to five identical green-and-white helicopters launch together and trade positions in the air, so no one on the ground can tell which aircraft carries the President of the United States. The Marines call it the presidential shell game — and it is only the visible layer of one of the most elaborate transport operations on Earth. In this video, we go inside HMX-1, the Nighthawks — the Marine squadron of more than seven hundred that has flown every president since Eisenhower without a single accident on a presidential lift. You'll see how the fleet works: the retiring VH-3D Sea King, the compact VH-60N White Hawk, and the new VH-92A Patriot. We break down the advance work behind every flight — landing zones surveyed like combat objectives, helicopters shipped ahead inside Air Force C-17s, decoys crewed by Yankee White-cleared Marines — and the defenses on board, from flares and chaff to lasers that blind incoming missiles. And we end with the newest chapter: the helicopter so powerful it tears up the South Lawn, and the granite helipad now being built at the White House because of it — the first in presidential history.
