The 1960s were a time when African grandmothers kept medicine in their compounds, not their cabinets. Many practices were dismissed as primitive and superstitious by colonial health authorities who arrived with manufactured alternatives and official endorsements.
Modern science has confirmed what grandmothers always knew.
In this video: 25 African home remedies from the 1960s that colonial health authorities dismissed, replaced, or banned — and that researchers now say were genius.
Shea butter confirmed by clinical research to reduce inflammation and increase collagen. Devil's claw confirmed by a 2019 Cochrane Review as clinically effective for joint pain — the same biochemical mechanism as ibuprofen. Neem confirmed as a natural antibiotic now being studied by pharmaceutical researchers who are filing patents on compounds African grandmothers applied freely from trees in their own compounds. Moringa — cleared from fields by colonial agricultural programmes as a worthless weed — now confirmed across 299 peer-reviewed studies as one of the most nutrient-dense plants ever studied. African black seed — called superstition by colonial medical authorities — now the subject of over 1,000 peer-reviewed studies on its active compound thymoquinone. Rooibos, bitter leaf, baobab, African ginger, and raw castor oil — every one of them dismissed, every one of them confirmed.
And the products marketed to African communities as replacements. Skin lightening creams containing hydroquinone and mercury compounds that caused permanent discolouration and thinned skin that could not be reversed. DDT distributed through colonial health programmes and later restricted globally under the Stockholm Convention for documented harm including cancer and endocrine disruption. Lye relaxers introduced to African markets that caused scalp burns, blistering, and lasting damage on children as young as five. Lead acetate progressive hair dyes that the FDA banned in 2022 — more than 60 years after African women first started using them.
The knowledge did not disappear when the colonial health post arrived. It went quiet. It stayed in the compound, in the mortar and pestle, in the hands that knew what to do before the question was asked.
Come back and tell me in the comments: which of these remedies did the women in your family use? Where are you from and what did your grandmother swear by? I read every one.
