Description
🕯️ Vienna, 21 November 1916: after nearly 68 years on the throne, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria dies at Schönbrunn Palace, and the imperial capital prepares the last great Habsburg state funeral, reconstructed here with AI from historical studies and records.
⛪ Step through the black-draped streets of the Innere Stadt on 30 November 1916 as the ornate baroque funeral carriage drawn by eight black horses moves slowly from the Hofburg to St. Stephen's Cathedral and then to the Capuchin Church on the Neuer Markt. Watch the young Emperor Charles I in his field-grey uniform, Empress Zita in her heavy black veil, and the four-year-old Crown Prince Otto walking behind the coffin under a grey November sky.
🏛️ The reconstruction follows the pontifical requiem sung by Cardinal-Archbishop Friedrich Gustav Piffl, the long cortège of Hungarian magnates, Polish nobles, Czech, Croatian, Slovenian, Ruthenian, Italian, Romanian and Bosnian delegations, and finally the ancient Anklopfzeremonie at the Kaisergruft — the three knocks at the crypt door, the full imperial titles refused twice, and the sovereign at last admitted only as "a mortal and sinful man." A ceremony that, in retrospect, was the funeral of an entire European order.
