Galdr (The Chanted Spell) | Old Norse Viking Music

“Galdr (The Chanted Spell)” is a dark Old Norse ritual song about the force of words when they are no longer spoken, but sung into being. In Norse tradition, galdr was not casual speech. It was chant, breath, rhythm and will, carried through the voice until language became power. This song follows a lone voice calling from the chest, shaped by raven cries, heavy steps and deep ceremonial rhythm. The lyrics move around the idea that a spell is not explained. It is carried, repeated and awakened through sound. A cold tone rises. The spell is not spoken. The spell is sung. Spell. Not spoken. Sung. Deep in the chest an ancient word sleeps, I draw the sound from my bones. No prayer, no gentle voice, the breath carries an edge in the mouth. Chant, chant, dark is the tongue, I call, and the call answers. I do not speak what the fathers knew, I sing until the blood sings. Ha ya, down into the lungs. Ho ra, beneath the tongue. Plain words die without heat. A deep song wakes the spell. Not spoken, sung. Spell upon the tongue. Not broken, carried. In darkness, with the drum. Not spoken, sung. Spell upon the tongue. Rising from the chest. Not spoken, sung. Bare feet count the heavy time, three blows strike the floor. My name loses its human shape, and crawls into the mouth of fate. No crown, no hero’s skin, only a voice that draws power. The raven cries once in the air, then the song lies over everything. Not spoken, sung. Spell upon the tongue. Not broken, carried. In darkness, with the drum. Not spoken, sung. Spell upon the tongue. Rising from the chest. Not spoken, sung. Mhmmmm Hmmm ha ya Hmmm ho ra If a word has weight, let it shake the ribs. If a word has teeth, let it bite the lip. If a word is ancient, do not make it clean. Sing it low until it lives. Heya hey, heya hey, the sound goes down where shadows wake. Heya hey, heya hey, the spell knows the path if the voice obeys. Not spoken, sung. Spell upon the tongue. Not broken, carried. In darkness, with the drum. Not spoken, sung. Spell upon the tongue. Rising from the chest. Not spoken, sung. Not spoken, sung. Not spoken, sung. Spell upon the tongue. Rising from the chest.
