Description

A small underwater ROV explored Holtún cenote at Chichén Itzá, investigating narrow spaces divers could not safely reach. The expedition formed part of a larger mystery: could the surrounding caves provide a route toward the water-filled cavity detected beneath El Castillo, the Pyramid of Kukulcán? This documentary follows the investigation involving archaeologist Guillermo de Anda and the Virtual Wonders team, including Corey Jaskolski and Chris Millbern. We examine the ROV exploration, the blocked passage investigated beneath nearby El Osario, and the electrical resistivity tomography that brought new attention to what lies beneath one of the world’s most recognizable Maya pyramids. What did the camera reveal? How does that evidence relate to the scans? And what remains between the explored passages and the suspected cavern beneath El Castillo? Follow the evidence through Chichén Itzá’s underground landscape—and discover why establishing a connection matters to understanding the ancient Maya’s relationship with water, sacred caves and pyramid construction. This video examines historical investigations. The ROV’s exploration of Holtún and the geophysical detection beneath El Castillo are separate findings; a traversable connection between them has not been established in the sources reviewed.
