Description

A narrow shaft rises more than 15 metres inside Egypt’s Bent Pyramid—and ends without an onward passage. Why did Sneferu’s builders create this unusual space, and what can its stonework reveal about its intended purpose? Inside the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur, the so-called “Chimney” connects to the lower chamber through an unusual arrangement of openings and stepped masonry. Its architecture has produced competing explanations: was it an abandoned route toward a burial chamber, part of a changed construction plan, or something else? In this Impossible Archives investigation, we compare original interior photographs, historical architectural drawings and modern survey research to examine the evidence. Follow the route into the pyramid, explore the Chimney’s unusual design, and discover why a shaft that leads nowhere remains so difficult to explain. This video examines a longstanding archaeological question using published documentation. Proposed functions are distinguished from directly recorded features.
