Get The Old Mexican Way, every old way written down: https://oldmexicanway.com
Last month I opened the cabinet above my refrigerator, and my wedding plates were still in the box. Thirty-one years, and my husband never once ate off them. He is gone now, and the plates are still waiting for a day good enough for them.
In my last video I told you I was messy for fifty years. These are the lessons I learned too late, and my mother knew every one. And no, I have not changed my mind about no se tira nada. Nothing on this list goes in the trash. It goes to a person.
THE 10 LESSONS
1️⃣ Stop saving the good things for later. There is no day worthy of the good plates. Every ordinary Tuesday is that day.
2️⃣ Your house was never too small. My mother raised six children with no garage and no attic. A box in the dark is not storage. It is a burial.
3️⃣ Everything you own asks something of you. The price of a thing is paid once, and its place in the house is paid every day.
4️⃣ Stop asking "might I need it someday". Ask "did I use it this month", and "would I feel sad, or relieved, if it disappeared tonight".
5️⃣ You are storing someone else's life, and they are storing yours. Say a date, out loud, kindly, one time.
6️⃣ It goes to a person, not a buyer. Pick a number: above it, list it for two weeks; below it, give it away the same day.
7️⃣ Never own more than you can clean on a bad day. A shelf with three things gets wiped. A shelf with forty gets skipped for two years.
8️⃣ Half of what you keep belongs to someone you used to be. Photograph it, write the story beside it, and let it go.
9️⃣ The window closes, and nobody warns you. Tonight, clear the path from your bed to the bathroom.
🔟 If you do not decide, your family will. The six of us cleared my mother's house in four days, and we almost fought over a wooden spoon.
When something is not on this list, ask three questions. Am I keeping it because I want it, or because deciding is harder? Could I get another one tomorrow, and what would it honestly cost? Does it belong to my life now, or to one that is finished?
The honest word: please do not try all ten this weekend. If it is your mother's house or your husband's closet, your heart sets the pace, and the papers and photographs can wait a year.
Who profits: the storage unit (a bill every month), the estate company, the organizer and the bins. Nobody makes a dollar from a woman who eats off her good plates and gives her table to the neighbor.
Tonight, do one: eat dinner off the good plates, and clear the hallway floor before bed.
Which one did you learn too late, and what did it cost you? Tell me, and your county. I read every one.
