Description

Marina Beach looks like a natural gift of the Bay of Bengal, but its huge width is largely a by-product of Chennai Port's breakwaters. Work on the artificial harbour began in 1876, and its two block-and-rubble arms cut across a northward littoral drift of roughly 0.3–0.5 million m³ of sand a year. Sand piled up on the up-drift south side, widening Marina to about 300 m on average, while the sediment-starved coast to the north retreated by about 500 m. The cyclone of 12 November 1881 breached nearly half a mile of the new breakwaters, and surf-driven sand later choked the east-facing entrance until a north-east entrance opened in 1904. On the north shore, 2.5–3 m monsoon waves with no sand to work with attacked seawalls and the coastal road, a textbook case of down-drift erosion. This 3D Short explains longshore transport, wave shadow, sediment budgets, dredging and groynes in about 80 seconds. Watch to the end to see why sand is never created, only relocated, and how one harbour reshaped two coastlines.
