Konkan Railway: 91 Tunnels, 1891 Bridges – Kaise Bani?

The Konkan Railway runs about 740 km from Roha to Thokur with 91 tunnels totalling 84.5 km and 1,891 bridges, roughly one bridge every 400 m. Because the line cuts across every east-west river and laterite spur, engineers had to design for lateritic soil, boulder-mixed soil and jointed basalt under 3,500–4,000 mm of annual rain. In tunnels like the 6.5 km Karbude, 3 m rock bolts clamp fractured rock into a compression zone while fibre shotcrete seals cracks and stops weathering. The 64 m Panval Nadi viaduct uses hollow octagonal piers and a prestressed box-girder deck that was cast on the bank and jacked across, India's first incremental launching. In deep cuttings, saturated laterite gets heavier and loses shear strength, so KRCL flattened slopes to 1:1 and added berms, lined drains, toe walls, vetiver grass and steel boulder nets. The result cut Mumbai to Mangaluru from 2,041 km to 914 km and from 41 hours to 15 hours.
