Description

Vijaydurg, the sea fort on the Konkan coast of Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, was nicknamed the Eastern Gibraltar for its coastal defences. Marine archaeological surveys by CSIR-NIO found a mortarless stone wall about 122 m long, 7 m wide and 3 m high, lying roughly 100 m offshore in 8–10 m of water. Its blocks reach 3.5 m in length and stay in place through self-weight and friction rather than binding mortar. Surveyors read it as a barrier against hostile fleets, while other researchers note it may also have worked as a breakwater. Up the shallow Waghotan creek, the Maratha navy's tidal dockyard measures 110 m by 75 m, with rock-cut and masonry walls, a lime-mortar floor and a gateless entrance that flares from 7 m to about 11 m. Ships of up to 500 tons entered on high tide and were repaired on a central platform during the lowest spring tides. Together, the submerged wall, the shallow creek and the tidal dock formed a naval system, and Vijaydurg is part of UNESCO's Maratha Military Landscapes of India, inscribed in 2025.
