🔗 Save $6,000 A Year with My Complete Amish Home-Saving Method I teach:

Come April you will walk out onto that lawn and it will be thin.
Not dead. That is the part everybody gets wrong. Green in patches and bare in patches, moss in the shade, weeds across the whole of it, and it will take until June to look like a lawn again. You will stand there with a cup of coffee and think the winter did it.
The winter did not do it. October did it.
I do not keep a lawn the way you keep a lawn. We have a yard that gets walked on and played on and driven across, and we have pasture, and between the two of them I have spent my life trying to get grass to come back in the spring. Pasture and lawn are the same plant with a different set of expectations laid on it. The grass does not know the difference.
My grandfather had a saying for it, and he said it standing in the April mud looking at a bare patch by the gate. What it looks like in April was decided in October.
Grass does its real work out of sight. A lawn in October has stopped putting its strength into leaf and is putting everything it has into root. So what you give it in October, it spends on root. What you give it in April, it spends on leaf, and leaf is the part you mow off and throw away.
Before any of the eight, there is one thing nobody puts at the front of these lists:
All of this is advice for cool season grass. Bluegrass, fescue, perennial rye. If you have Bermuda, zoysia, St Augustine, centipede or buffalo grass, feeding in October pushes out soft growth that the first hard frost kills, and you can carry that damage into next summer. Four of the eight are still yours. The other four wait until late spring. The video says which is which, and how to tell what you have got without knowing a thing about grass.
What we go through:
Finding the water first, and why feeding is about sixth in importance Walking the lawn in the rain, and the difference between water that sits and water that runs The downspout fix that is the single best afternoon most people will spend on a lawn The thumb test against your own fence row, and what compaction actually does to a root Why spiked shoes and spiked rollers make compaction worse rather than better Core aerating, and why the plugs stay where they fall The garden fork method that does the same job for nothing Mowing late, mowing high, and the one cut of the year where short is right Snow mould, and the September decision that causes it Grinding leaves in instead of paying to have the best thing on your ground carried away Overseeding in autumn instead of spring, and the watering mistake that wastes the whole bag Why one autumn feeding beats two spring feedings Taking dandelions in autumn, when the plant carries it down to the root itself Why you must not seed and treat weeds in the same month Staying off frozen grass, and the brown path you will be looking at in April
The plain limits: thin is not dead, and if you do none of this your lawn is still there in spring, just thinner and weedier and two months slower. Deep shade cannot be fixed by any of it, and past a point the moss is the right plant for the place. And do not do all eight in one weekend, because the weed treatment will undo the seeding.
There is no scheme in any of it. A bag of fertiliser is twenty dollars and you were buying it anyway, and buying it in October instead of April is the whole trick. Aerating is a morning's hire or an evening with a fork you already own. Leaves are free and you were paying to have them carried off. The expensive way to keep a lawn is to do nothing all autumn and buy your way out of it in May, which is exactly when every advertisement you see is for lawn feed.
This week, go out while the grass is still green and walk it in the rain. Find the water. Push your thumb in. That is the whole of the work and it takes twenty minutes.
Tell me in the comments which of the eight you have never once done. And if you are new here, tell me what sort of ground you have as well, clay, sand or loam.
Next time I want to show you how to find that out for certain, with a jar of water and a spoonful of your own soil and nothing else.
I gathered the whole of it into a book at eliasyoder dot com.
The people who built this country with their hands knew that, and we are only just starting to remember it.
