Description

🔗 Save $6,000 A Year with My Complete Amish Home-Saving Method I teach: https://eliasyoder.com There is a baking tray in your kitchen that you have given up on. You know the one. Black across the middle and black in the corners, through the dishwasher a dozen times and out again exactly the same, until somewhere along the way you decided that is just what that tray looks like now. Most of that black is not ruined metal. It is grease. Fat that has been heated and cooled and heated again until it went hard and brown and then near black, sitting on top of perfectly good steel, and it comes off for about two dollars of things already in your cupboard. My grandmother showed me which way round to do it, with a roasting pan the day after a butchering. I went at it cold with a scouring pad and my shoulder behind it and got nowhere, except that one brown patch in the middle became a grey smear over the whole thing. She filled it with hot water and left it. Then poured that off, put soap in, and told me to leave it be again. When I came back it came away like it had never been stuck. Loosening a thing and carrying it off are two different jobs. The paste is three things. Half a cup of baking soda, one tablespoon of dish soap, one to two tablespoons of warm water. Mixed to about the thickness of soft butter. And here is why it is two ingredients and not one. Baking soda is an alkali and grease yields to an alkali, so the soda loosens the fat and lets go of its grip on the metal. But loosened grease with nowhere to go just gets pushed about, which is exactly what I did to that pan. Soap has one end that likes grease and one end that likes water, so it takes hold of the fat and carries it off with the rinse instead of letting it settle somewhere else. One to loosen. The other to carry away. What we go through: What that black actually is, and why it is three different materials stacked on each other Why a paste works beautifully in one spot and does nothing six inches away The warming step almost nobody does, and why a cold tray makes a good cleaner look useless Why you must wipe the dirty paste off before any water touches the tray The forty-five minutes that are the actual cleaning, and the damp cloth that keeps it working The two-second test that tells you whether you are finished or wasting your arm What to do with a tray that genuinely is finished, and why it is not rubbish Why a dishwasher can run fifty cycles and change nothing Stainless and why you move with the grain, enamel and its chips, glass and the scraper that is not a knife Oven racks, grill pans, and why scratched chrome rusts from the scratch outward Cast iron grates, and the thin film of oil that keeps the rust off Stainless pans, non-stick, and the aluminium test patch nobody has heard of Why you do not want hydrogen peroxide or vinegar in this, and what never to mix The plain limits. This does not take off carbon, so if the surface is smooth and dark you are finished and more scrubbing will not help. It does not undo scratches, restore a non-stick coating or lift heat tint out of stainless. And it does not work in the five minutes most people give it, which is the single commonest way it fails. There is no scheme in any of it, though it is worth noticing where the money sits. A jar of soda and a bottle of dish soap come to about two dollars across a great many batches, and there is no advertising budget anywhere for a jar of baking soda. The sprays cost several dollars and get bought again every month. Tell me in the comments what the worst thing in your kitchen is, the one you have already given up on. And if you are new here, tell me whether your cooktop is glass or steel or enamel as well, because that changes half of what I say here. Next time, a rusted cast iron pan, the kind that comes out of a sale box orange all over and gets passed by, because there is no such thing as a ruined iron pan. I gathered the whole of it into a book at eliasyoder dot com. The people who built this country with their hands knew that, and we are only just starting to remember it. #EliasYoder #CleaningTips #BakingSoda #BurntPan #OvenTray #DegreaserDIY #KitchenCleaning #CastIron #Stovetop #NonStick #HomeTips #OldWays #SelfReliance #FrugalLiving #DIYCleaner
