Description
🏰 London, 1670: ten years after the Restoration returned the Stuart dynasty from exile, the vast Palace of Whitehall wakes before dawn along the Thames. Step inside the private apartments of King Charles II and follow, hour by hour, a single morning of the Restoration court — reconstructed with AI from historical studies and period records.
⚔️ The documentary reconstructs the ritual of the levée as practised at Whitehall between six and eleven o'clock: the drawing of the state bed curtains, the first cup of chocolate, the recited prayers of the Chapel Royal, the barber, the periwig, the silver-embroidered silk vest introduced by the king's own dress reform of 1666, the Flemish lace cravat, the red-heeled shoes. Each garment has its keeper, each keeper his inherited right of presentation.
📜 The film also places that morning in its political geography: ministers of the Cabal — Clifford, Arlington, Buckingham, Ashley, Lauderdale — the secret Treaty of Dover signed with Louis XIV that same year, the arrival of Louise de Kéroualle in the retinue of Henrietta Anne, the quiet fellowship of the Royal Society, and the famously brisk royal walk through Saint James's Park with the long-eared spaniels that would bear his name.
