Description
Most of the short haircuts Black women over 60 get handed come in two kinds, the clippered crop with the squared-off sideburns or the stiff Saturday set, and neither one was ever the only choice.

Janet learned better in a corner barbershop, from a woman barber who knew how to cut natural hair the way it's worn. Here she walks through five haircuts that make older Black women look younger: the full-crown cut that hides a thinning crown, a dry-cut curly bob for the women who want to keep some length, the soft taper that fixes the hard crop, a round cut for gray natural hair that gets rid of the pyramid shape, and a soft pixie for pressed or relaxed hair.
You'll also hear the four questions to ask before anyone cuts your hair, why so many stylists were never trained on our texture, which cut suits a round or long face, and how to keep a short natural haircut looking fresh between visits. There's a plain warning, too, about the scalp signs that need a dermatologist who knows Black hair before any cut goes close.

StatPearls, NIH Bookshelf. Scalp hair grows about half an inch a month.
International Journal of Cosmetic Science (2011). Measured differences between gray and pigmented hair were modest.
