Description

In Tokyo, a 3-year-old walks to the shop alone, buys vegetables and bread, and walks home while her mother waits. In India we hesitate to send a 10-year-old to the corner shop. Are Japanese parents careless? No. Behind this freedom is a whole system of quiet safety, and in this video we look at how it works and how Indian parents can start the same way, safely, at home. In this video: • Hajimete no Otsukai ("My First Errand"), the Japanese TV show running since 1991, and the hidden safety crew behind every child • The proverb "kawaii ko ni wa tabi o saseyo": let your beloved child travel • Shudan toko: how Japanese children walk to school in neighbourhood groups • Crossing volunteers and "kodomo 110-ban" child safe houses • The honest part: in Japan, 7-year-olds are the most injured pedestrians, which is why the safety net keeps growing • Why Indian streets are different, and our own strength: neighbours we know • Priya and 5-year-old Siri: a step-by-step way to start, from small jobs at home to the gate, a short watched walk and going out with friends Honest note: the ages in this video are only examples. Every child and every street is different, and the decision is always the parent's. Never send a young child near busy roads alone. Start small, watch from a distance and increase freedom only when your child is ready. 00:00 A 3-Year-Old Shops Alone in Tokyo 00:45 The TV Show and Its Hidden Safety Crew 01:37 "Let Your Beloved Child Travel" 02:17 Walking to School in Groups 02:55 Volunteers and Child Safe Houses 03:33 The Honest Part: Japan Is Not Risk-Free 04:13 Indian Streets Are Different 04:47 Priya and Siri: How to Start at Home 05:31 Older Kids, and Why You Decide 06:15 The Proud Moment What was the first errand you did alone as a child, and at what age? And when did your child do their first one? Tell us in the comments. This video shares general parenting ideas for awareness. Child safety depends on your child's age, your neighbourhood and traffic.
