Description

Halloween is often described as an ancient Celtic festival of the dead, ruled by a god named Samhain and later stolen by the Church. The real history is stranger. Samhain, meaning “summer’s end,” was a Gaelic festival marking the close of the harvest, with great fires lit on hills like Tlachtga and Tara, while the “god of the dead” was a misunderstanding by the 18th-century writer Charles Vallancey. We follow every layer: the Christian feast of All Saints set on November 1 by Pope Gregory III and Gregory IV, the soul cakes of medieval souling, Scottish guising, the Irish turnip lanterns of Stingy Jack, the famine that carried these customs to America, and the first printed “trick or treat” in a Canadian newspaper in 1927. (Sources: Ronald Hutton, The Stations of the Sun; World History Encyclopedia; Lethbridge Herald, 1927.)
