Description
Odysseus won the war in a single night, lost everything to the sea, and spent ten years fighting his way home.
In the traditional chronology handed down from antiquity, Troy fell around 1184 BC after ten years of siege, brought down not by strength but by a hollow wooden horse. Odysseus, king of Ithaca, was the man behind it. When the war ended, he loaded twelve ships with the men who had survived a decade of fighting and set sail for home. None of them would live to see it. It would take him ten more years.
This is his beginning.
The Cicones took the first of his men, a raid gone wrong on the coast of Thrace. The Lotus-Eaters nearly took the rest, feeding them a fruit that erased all will to leave. Then came Polyphemus, a Cyclops who trapped them in his cave and ate them one by one, until Odysseus blinded him and boasted his own name as he escaped. Polyphemus prayed to his father, Poseidon, and the god of the sea made the return of Odysseus a personal war.
Every escape led to a worse one. Aeolus gave him a bag holding every contrary wind, and his own crew opened it within sight of home, out of greed for gold they thought it held. The Laestrygonians, giants who hurled boulders into the harbor, destroyed eleven of his twelve ships in minutes. Circe turned the survivors into pigs on Aeaea, and kept Odysseus a year before letting them go, on the condition that he sail to the Underworld first and hear his fate from the dead prophet Tiresias.
He survived the Sirens by binding himself to the mast. He survived Scylla and Charybdis by accepting the loss of six more men rather than losing the ship. He could not survive his own crew, who slaughtered the sacred cattle of Helios out of hunger, defying a direct warning from the gods. Zeus destroyed the ship in a storm. Every man died except Odysseus. He washed ashore alone, and the nymph Calypso kept him on her island for seven years, offering him immortality if he stayed. He refused.
Ten years, a dozen ships lost to one, a crew that doomed itself before any god could, and a king who came home not as a conqueror but as a beggar no one recognized. Over a hundred suitors were living in his house by then, devouring his wealth and courting his wife. He killed every one of them. This is not a story about strength. It is a story about a man too clever to die.
This is the instrumental version of the intro theme for the series composed with the help of modern AI and human editing.
This is part of the ODYSSEIA series, a song for every stage of Odysseus's journey home, each one built on Homer's original text and the world of the ancient Greek epic.
