Description

The business documentary on fraud, Robert Maxwell, and the massive pension scandal uncovered only after the media tycoon mysteriously disappeared from his yacht. On November 5, 1991, Robert Maxwell vanished from the Lady Ghislaine near the Canary Islands. Hours later, his body was found in the Atlantic. At first, the mystery was how one of Britain's most powerful businessmen had fallen from his yacht. Then investigators looked closer. Behind Maxwell's newspaper empire was a financial structure so complicated that few people understood where the money was coming from or where it was going. As his companies struggled under enormous debt, assets from employee pension funds were moved and used as collateral to keep the empire alive. Those pension funds belonged to the people who printed his newspapers, sold his books, and worked inside his companies. More than 30,000 people were ultimately tied to schemes from which hundreds of millions of pounds had disappeared. This documentary follows the rise and fall of Robert Maxwell, from war refugee and decorated soldier to publishing billionaire, owner of the Daily Mirror, and one of Britain's most controversial businessmen. It examines: Robert Maxwell's rise to power The Daily Mirror and his media empire The Maxwell pension scandal How pension assets were used to support his companies His enormous debts and collapsing financial empire The warnings regulators had issued decades earlier His mysterious death aboard the Lady Ghislaine The disagreement surrounding the circumstances of his death The financial scandal discovered after he was gone And the institutional failures that allowed it to continue In 1971, British government inspectors had already warned that Maxwell could not be relied upon to properly steward a publicly traded company. Yet thirteen years later, he was able to acquire the Daily Mirror and rebuild himself into one of Britain's most powerful media figures. That may be the real mystery of the Robert Maxwell story. Not simply how he died. But how so many banks, auditors, boards, trustees and regulators were able to look at pieces of his empire without anyone stopping to examine the whole thing. A story about corporate fraud, pension theft, financial crime, media power, institutional failure, debt, deception, and the collapse of a business empire.
