Description

In 1636, Puritan ministers founded Harvard to train clergy. For centuries afterward, American churches built the nation's hospitals, universities, and orphanages. Today, many of those same traditions spend their largest building budgets on espresso bars and lounges. This documentary traces that transformation. We explore how colonial denominations built much of America's early civic infrastructure, how mid-century federal legislation, including the Hill-Burton Act and the rise of Medicare, nationalized healthcare and education, and how suburban growth pushed churches toward a very different model of building. Along the way, we examine sociologist Ray Oldenburg's concept of the "third place," the seeker-sensitive movement, and why the modern megachurch coffee shop is not a design trend but the result of a century of institutional change. This is a fair, research-based look at how American churches shifted from public institution builders to carefully designed gathering spaces, without arguing that one era was more faithful than another.
