Description

There are twelve stones sitting at the bottom of the Jordan River right now. Nobody can see them. And Joshua put them there on purpose — in the middle of a flooded river, knowing the water would cover them forever. So why did Joshua set up 12 stones in the middle of the Jordan River bed? Most Christians know the famous part of this story. God split the Jordan, the people walked across on dry ground, and twelve men built a memorial on the far bank at Gilgal. But almost everyone reads right past Joshua 4:9 — where the Bible says Joshua set up a SECOND set of twelve stones, in the middle of the river, on the exact spot where the priests stood with the ark. And then the water came roaring back and buried them. Two piles of stones. One out in the open. One hidden under the water. Why? In this study we trace it line by line: • The ark in the flood — how God's presence held back the water so the nation could cross • The first twelve stones at Gilgal — the memorial built so children would ask "what do these stones mean?" • The second twelve stones — the hidden pile in the riverbed, and why Joshua built a monument nobody would ever see • The exact spot — why he marked the place where God stood in the flood, a monument for God, not for people • What the hidden stones really mean — the old life buried under the water, the new life raised on the far bank • The number twelve — every tribe buried, every tribe raised, nobody left in the river Here's the heart of it. Crossing the Jordan wasn't just a commute. It was a burial. The old life — the wilderness, the wandering, everything they were leaving behind — got covered by the water and never came back up. And the new life stood tall on the far bank in the daylight. Death on one side, new life on the other, written in stone four thousand years ago. And it all points to Jesus. He was baptized in this same Jordan — down into the water, up out of it. When you come to Him, your old self is buried like those stones under the river, and your new self is raised like the stones standing at Gilgal (Romans 6). And don't miss the priests: they carried God's presence into the deepest part of the flood FIRST, held back the water, and came out LAST — after every last person was safe. That's exactly what Jesus did. He walked into death first, held back the judgment we had coming, and would not come out until you were home. You didn't get yourself across. Somebody stood in the flood and held it back for you. 📖 Chapters / timestamps below. 🔔 Subscribe for more deep-dive Bible studies — the Bible is deep, it doesn't have to be complicated.
