Description
What if two of the most ambitious engineering projects ever imagined could completely transform the deserts of Egypt and Israel?
The Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth, is shrinking by more than a meter every year, leaving behind massive sinkholes, abandoned resorts, and an ecological disaster. Meanwhile, deep in Egypt’s Sahara Desert, engineers have spent over a century imagining an extraordinary project: flooding the Qattara Depression with Mediterranean seawater to create one of the largest artificial lakes on Earth.
In this episode of Looking 4, we explore two extraordinary megaprojects that could reshape the Middle East and North Africa. From ambitious plans to connect the Red Sea to the Dead Sea, to Cold War nuclear excavation proposals and the dream of generating massive amounts of hydroelectric power in the Sahara, these projects promise enormous benefits but face equally daunting engineering, environmental, and political challenges.
Could flooding the desert be the solution to some of the region’s greatest challenges, or are these megaprojects simply too ambitious to ever become reality?
