Description
Right now, in the United States, cranes are filling the horizon as one enormous tower after another stretches further and further toward the sky. But it isn’t happening in New York City, nor Chicago, nor frankly anywhere you might initially guess.
It turns out the American epicenter of skyscraper construction is now Miami.
Across Downtown Miami and Brickell, dozens of towers are currently rising from construction sites crowded along the edge of Biscayne Bay. Among them are the 275-meter Okan Tower, the 286-meter Cipriani Residences, and the 320-meter Waldorf Astoria Miami.
Once completed, the Waldorf Astoria will become Miami’s first supertall skyscraper, dwarfing the building that previously held the city’s height record for almost two decades.
This represents one of the largest concentrations of skyscraper construction anywhere in the Western world, and it’s producing a skyline on the scale of cities far larger and historically more powerful.
Though it may seem surprising, this city - which is currently still not even the most populous in the state of Florida - is attempting to transform itself into one of the great vertical cities of the 21st century.
And the extraordinary amount of money now pouring into its skyline raises a much larger question: why is this happening here - and what kind of city is Miami actually becoming?
In this episode of Looking 4, we’ll attempt to answer that very question. We’ll look at some of the specific buildings that are forming this new skyline, and we’ll investigate what led Miami to embark on such an ambitious transformation project. And, using what we uncover, we’ll try to gain a view into what Miami may be about to become.
