Description

Spacesuit gloves can place enough pressure on astronauts' hands to cause injuries, including painful fingernail separation in some cases. NASA has studied this problem because pressurized gloves must protect astronauts while still allowing them to perform precise work. Another surprising feature is hidden underneath the suit: a cooling garment containing approximately 300 feet of tubing. Chilled water circulates through it to remove excess body heat during spacewalks. Spacesuits also use multiple protective layers, with different materials helping manage pressure, insulation, wear, and exposure to small debris. Perhaps one of the most remarkable safety features is NASA's SAFER system, a compact emergency propulsion unit with small thrusters. It is designed to help an astronaut maneuver back toward safety if accidentally separated from the space station during a spacewalk. Would you trust a tiny emergency propulsion system in space? DISCLAIMER: Fingernail injuries are a documented risk, not an inevitable outcome. SAFER is an emergency contingency system and cannot guarantee rescue in every situation. #spacesuits #nasa #astronaut #spacewalk #spacefacts #spacestation
