Description
Bayonets caused fewer than 1 in 100 recorded wounds in the American Civil War. So why did every soldier carry one?
Union Army hospital records list only 922 sabre and bayonet wounds out of roughly 250,000 treated. The blade made the musket heavier and slower to load, yet no army gave it up. The reason is simple: when a line charged with fixed bayonets, the other side usually broke and ran before the steel ever arrived.
