The Dark Secret Behind the Dead Marshes - Lord of The Rings Explained

What are the mysterious lights of the Dead Marshes, and what exactly was Frodo seeing beneath the water? In this video, we explore one of the creepiest and most mysterious locations in The Lord of the Rings: the Dead Marshes. Frodo, Sam and Gollum encounter strange lights known as the “candles of corpses,” while the faces of dead Elves, Men and Orcs appear beneath the dark water. But are these really the bodies of warriors who died thousands of years earlier, ghosts, illusions, or something even stranger? We’ll look at the Battle of Dagorlad and the War of the Last Alliance, how the marshes eventually spread across the ancient battlefield, and the possible origins of the supernatural lights that lure travellers from the safe path. We’ll also dig into Tolkien’s earlier ideas for the Dead Marshes found in The War of the Ring, the folklore of corpse candles and will-o’-the-wisps, and Tolkien’s fascinating comments about the influence of the Battle of the Somme on the landscape surrounding Mordor. The movies gave us one of the most haunting scenes in The Two Towers, but Tolkien’s writings make the mystery of the Dead Marshes even stranger. #LordOfTheRings #Tolkien #DeadMarshes #LOTR #MiddleEarth #TheTwoTowers Music by Luis Humanoide 2 - Middle Earth (Copyright Free Fantasy Music inspired by Lord of the Rings) check out his channel: https://www.youtube.com/@luishumanoide2
